Nallathangaal Temple [நல்லதங்காள் கோவில்] Watrap
This temple is located in Arjunapuram of Vatthirayiruppu (WATRAP) near Srivilliputhur. In 15th century, this region was ruled by Ramalinga Sethupathi and Indirani. He had a son called Nallathami and a daughter named Nallathangaal. After Ramalinga Sethupathi , Nallathambi was ruling this place. Nallathangaal was married to Kasirajan from Manamadurai. She had seven children. Once there was a severe famine in Manamadurai. Hence Kasirajan sent her wife and children to Watrap.
At the time Nallathangaal reached her brother’s house, her brother was not at home. He went for hunting. His wife Mooliyalangari did not receive her well. She gave green firewood, defective pot and rice to prepare food. However, as Nallathangaal was a godly person, she made fire with the green wood and somehow managed hunger. Days passed. But her brother did not return home. As she could not manage children with hungry, she decided to commit suicide. She went to the nearby well and fell into it with her seven children.
Her brother Nallathambi came to know this tragedy on his return. He killed her wife and himself. Meantime Kasirajan came to Watrap and knew all the fact. He also lost his life himself. Lord Siva and Parvathi appeared before Nallathangaal, Nallathambi and Kasirajan. God blessed them with life. But they did not want to live in the Earth. They begged god to have them at their feet. But God directed them to protect the people for some time.
The main shrine has the statue of Goddess Nallathangaal. Three is an idol of the 7 children carved in a single stone in another shrine.
Watrap is well connected by bus routes from Srivilliputhur, Virudhunagar and Madurai.
